Open individual accounts in your name only to protect your income and savings.
Understand what you owe jointly vs. individually. Work to separate these obligations.
Update beneficiaries on retirement accounts, life insurance, and any other policies.
If you have children, ensure they're protected if something happens to you.
Make sure titles reflect current ownership. Remove names as needed.
Transfer accounts to your name only to build credit history and avoid complications.
Your income and expenses have changed. Build a budget that reflects your new reality.
Update your name on all legal documents, accounts, and identification.
Some truths to hold onto as you navigate this transition.
Too often divorcees feel like they should not ask for what is theirs. Identify what is yours—what you brought into the marriage—and make sure you leave as whole as possible.
Some people drag out divorce for years because they want to hold on to a house or a car. Your mental health is worth more than any asset. You can buy another house. You can earn more money. But you cannot get back the years you spent fighting over things that do not matter.
You don't have to figure this out alone. I'm here to help you create a financial plan for your new beginning and ensure you're protected every step of the way.
