Set Apart | What It Really Means to Devote Your Money to God

"But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do."

1 Peter 1:15

Devote. It is a word we use often... but do we know what it actually carries?

The word traces back to 16th century Latin... devovere. It means "to consecrate." To formally vow. It is built from two Latin roots... de (formally) and vovere (to vow). To devote something was not a casual act. It was a solemn, intentional setting apart. A consecration.

That word... consecrate... brought something else to mind immediately. Because the Bible uses another word that carries the same weight.

Holy.

To be holy means to be set apart. Not perfect. Not unreachable. Set apart. Marked. Consecrated for a specific purpose. And God calls us to it directly... "Be holy, for I am holy" (1 Peter 1:16).

So when we open this Monday Money Devotion, I want us to understand what we are actually doing here. We are not just talking about budgets and bank accounts. We are consecrating this time. We are setting it apart. We are making a vow... to bring our finances before God with intention, with honesty, and with faith.

When We Devote the Wrong Thing

I had a conversation recently that stayed with me. The person I was speaking with had their eyes fixed entirely on the end result... the number, the goal, the financial finish line. If the money was not there, something must be wrong with them. Not their plan. Them.

That is what happens when we devote ourselves to the outcome instead of the One who holds it. We consecrate our energy, our time, and our identity to a number... and the number becomes our measure of worth.

But always remember...

God has already stamped you as worthy. Created in His image. Whether your account holds $1,000 or $1,000,000 today does not change that. Not one bit.

Your identity was set apart by God long before your bank statement had a say.

What It Looks Like to Consecrate Your Money

For me, the answer is grounded in purpose. My purpose is to love God and to love people. I wake up every morning looking for ways to do those two things... and whether that day produces positive income does not determine whether I fulfilled what I was called to do.

The dollars do not dictate the purpose. The purpose consecrates the dollars.

I do not devote my energy to making more money for its own sake. I devote my energy to doing what God tells me to do... and I manage what He provides so well that when He calls me to the next thing, I can obey completely and immediately. No hesitation. No financial barrier. Just YES, LORD. YOUR SERVANT IS LISTENING.

That is what it means to consecrate your money. Not just to budget it or save it... but to set it apart for God's good work. To handle it as something sacred. To say with your financial decisions... this belongs to Him, and I am stewarding it well.

Reflection | What are you devoting your time, your money, and your energy toward? What does that reflect about who you BElieve you are... and whose you BElieve you are?

You get to choose again today. Every single day, you decide who you BE... and then your actions flow from that identity.

A Word Over You

I see you as wealthy. Not because of what is in your account right now... but because you are created in the image of the God who owns it all. The creator of heaven and earth poured something into you that no bank balance can measure.

This Monday Money Devotion is your moment to set that apart. To consecrate it. To bring it before God with open hands and a willing heart.
