Stages, Not Ages: Why Your Birthday Doesn't Define Your Financial Journey
Stages, Not Ages: Why Your Birthday Doesn't Define Your Financial Journey
Stop comparing. Start where you are.
Stages, not ages.
That's one of the most important concepts I teach — and it's something I wrote about in my book Plant Your Money Seeds.
Because when it comes to your finances, your age doesn't define your journey. Your stage does.
The Age Comparison Trap
We've been conditioned to believe that certain financial milestones should happen by certain ages:
"By 30, you should have X saved."
"By 40, you should own a home."
"By 50, you should have your retirement figured out."
And when we don't hit those markers? We feel behind. Ashamed. Like we failed somehow.
But here's what those "rules" don't account for:
Life doesn't follow a script.
Life Happens in Stages, Not Ages
It doesn't matter if you're 25 years old or 35 or 55 or 75.
What matters is the STAGE of life you're in right now.
You may be single — navigating finances completely on your own for the first time.
You may be a parent — juggling diapers and daycare and wondering how to save for college when you can barely save for next week.
You may be doing life with a partner — trying to figure out how to merge money, values, and goals as a couple.
You may be caring for a sick parent or child — and finances have taken a backseat to survival mode.
You may be going through a divorce — or recently divorced — and everything you thought you knew about your money has been turned upside down.
You may be grieving the loss of a spouse — and now you're handling finances alone for the first time in decades.
There are so many areas of our lives where money touches.
But none of them have anything to do with how many candles were on your last birthday cake.
Stop Comparing. Start Where You Are.
The comparison game will steal your peace every single time.
Looking at someone your age who has more? That doesn't mean you failed. It means they're in a different stage.
Starting your financial journey at 45? That doesn't mean you're late. It means you're starting NOW — which is the only time that matters.
Feeling behind because life threw you curveballs? That's not failure. That's being human.
There is no "behind." There is only where you are.
And where you are is the perfect place to start.
Look at Your Money Based on Your Stage
Instead of asking, "Where should I be at my age?" — ask:
"What does my money need to look like for the stage I'm in RIGHT NOW?"
If you're single: What does financial stability look like for YOU — not for a family of four?
If you're a caregiver: What systems can support you while you're pouring into someone else?
If you're divorced: What does rebuilding look like when you're starting over?
If you're grieving: What's the first small step toward clarity?
Your stage determines your strategy. Not your age.
You're Not Behind. You're Right on Time.
I want you to release the shame of "should have."
You should have started sooner. You should have saved more. You should have known better.
No.
You're here now. That's what matters.
And wherever you are — whatever stage of life you're navigating — there's a path forward.
You don't need to catch up to anyone else. You just need to take the next step for YOU.
Your Stage. Your Start. Your Transformation.
I created a FREE resource called the Mini But Mighty Money Reset Guide to help you take that first step — no matter what stage of life you're in.
