How to Build a Culture That Actually Sticks

Most leaders tell their teams something once and assume it's going to stick.

You present a new vision. You announce a new direction. You share the company values. And then you wonder why, six months later, nothing has actually changed.

The problem isn't the message. The problem is the follow-up.

There's a biblical principle that works perfectly here: Seed, water, harvest.

In First Corinthians, Paul says, "One plants, another waters, but God gives the increase."

Here's what this means for mentoring culture:

Seeding is when a leader first introduces an idea, a value, or a principle to their team. You plant the seed. You communicate the vision. You share the expectation.

But then what? You move on to the next thing. And the seed withers because it was never watered.

Watering is the repetition. It's saying the same thing again. And again. And again. It's reinforcing the message through different channels, different stories, and different contexts. It's the consistency that makes it real.

Most leaders skip this step. They think if they said it once, that's enough. But human brains don't work that way. We forget. We get distracted. We need to hear something repeatedly before it becomes part of who we are.

That's where mentoring comes in. When a mentor meets with someone regularly, they're watering that seed. They're reinforcing the message. They're checking in and saying, "Are you living this out? Do you need help? Let me share a story of how this looked in my life."

Harvest is the result. When you've seeded and watered consistently, eventually that seed grows. That person doesn't just understand the value anymore. They embody it. They live it. And then they mentor others in it.

Here's how this looks practically in an organization:

When a new employee joins, assign a mentor. Seed: Here's who we are. Water: Meet weekly for 30-45 minutes. Harvest: That new employee becomes confident in your culture and starts mentoring others.

When someone gets promoted, don't just throw them in. They might have potential, but they don't have the experience of their predecessor. Assign a mentor to water that seed. Help them learn not just the job, but the way your organization does things.

When you introduce a new initiative or value, don't assume one town hall covers it. Seed it. Water it repeatedly. Have leaders tell stories about it. Have mentors discuss it. Let it marinate until it becomes who you are.

The mentoring culture that actually sticks is the one where leadership commits to the seed, water, harvest cycle. It's not a one-time event. It's a repeating rhythm.

That's how you build something that lasts.
