Rest Your Body, Spirit, and Wallet
🛋️ Rest is doing something. It is a new way of living for people who have spent generations being told their bodies, time, and labor belonged to somebody else.
We see God rest after creation in Genesis 2:2 to 3. But Israel is first instructed to keep Sabbath after leaving Egypt. Before the commandments are given at Sinai, God teaches them through manna in Exodus 16.
On the sixth day, they were to gather enough for two days. On the seventh, they were to rest. No scrambling. No proving. No going back out because fear told them there would not be enough.
That matters because they had just come out of slavery. They knew how to work. They knew how to survive. What they had to learn was that they could trust God without producing every single day.
A different kind of preparation
🧺 Sabbath did not mean carelessness. They prepared on the sixth day. They paid attention to what they needed. Then they stopped.
That is a useful question for money too. Are you preparing so that you can rest, or are you spending every day reacting because you have never made room to pause?
Resting your wallet may look like one day when you do not buy anything. It may look like planning meals before the weekend. It may look like deciding what is enough before an advertisement gets to decide for you.
This is not a rule to perform. It is a chance to remember who provides for you.
One quiet practice
⏰ Choose one day this week to spend nothing outside of what you already prepared for. Notice what comes up. The urge to browse. The urge to order. The feeling that you should be doing something.
Bring that feeling to God. Ask Him what He is teaching you about rest, trust, and enough.
Prayer
✨ Lord, teach me to prepare with wisdom and rest without fear. Help me remember that my body, my time, and my money are not asking me to be a machine. Show me what enough looks like today. Amen.
Exodus 16:22 to 30. Deuteronomy 5:15.
Reflection questions
✨ Where have you overlooked the work rest is doing, instead of trusting God with what you have prepared?
- What would one no-spend day show you about your habits?
- What can you prepare before Sabbath so you are free to rest?
