Tithing vs. Taxes: The Difference Between Demand and Invitation
Tithing vs. Taxes: The Difference Between Demand and Invitation
Why God's approach to giving is nothing like the IRS.
Jesus died for you on the cross.
Not your ties.
Did somebody convince you otherwise?
I've met a lot of people who carry guilt and shame around tithing. They believe that if they're not giving 10% to the church, God is disappointed in them. Angry, even. That they're failing some spiritual test.
And I want to gently challenge that belief today.
Because the God I know doesn't operate like the IRS.
Uncle Sam Wants Your Money
Let's talk about taxes for a moment.
The government wants your money. That's not controversial — it's a fact.
And they don't just want it. They require it.
Every year, you are legally obligated to file and pay your taxes. On time. In full. No exceptions.
What happens if you don't pay?
→ Penalties → Interest → Audits → Liens on your property → In extreme cases — jail
The government doesn't care about a relationship with you. They don't want to know your heart, your struggles, your dreams.
They just want what's owed.
That's a transaction. A demand. A requirement.
There is no love in it. There is no grace in it. There is no transformation in it.
God Is Different
Now let's talk about tithing.
Some people treat tithing like it's taxes for God. Like He's up there with a ledger, keeping track of who gave and who didn't. Like He's going to punish you if you fall short.
But that's not the God of the Bible.
His love is not conditional on your giving.
He doesn't love you more when you tithe and less when you don't.
He doesn't threaten you with spiritual jail if you miss a Sunday offering.
He wants a relationship with you — not your money.
Think about that for a moment.
The Creator of the universe isn't interested in your 10%. He's interested in your heart. Your trust. Your intimacy with Him.
When you give, it's not supposed to be out of obligation, guilt, or fear.
It's supposed to be an overflow. A response to love. A natural expression of gratitude for what He's already done.
The Invitation vs. The Demand
Here's the fundamental difference:
Taxes are demanded. Pay or face consequences.
Tithing is invited. Give because you want to, not because you have to.
The government takes. God invites.
The government threatens. God transforms.
The government wants your compliance. God wants your heart.
When you draw closer to God — not out of obligation, but out of genuine relationship — something shifts inside you.
Your heart changes. Your priorities change. Your relationship with money changes.
You stop holding on so tightly. You stop fearing scarcity. You start trusting in His provision.
And giving becomes joyful instead of burdensome.
What Transformation Looks Like
Here's what I've seen in my own life and in the lives of people I coach:
When you approach tithing as a transaction — as something you HAVE to do — it creates resentment. It feels like another bill. Another demand. Another thing taking from you.
But when you approach giving as a response to relationship — as something you GET to do — it creates freedom.
You give because you've experienced His love. You give because you trust Him with your future. You give because you want to participate in His work.
And when you do that? He has this way of transforming you.
Not because you paid Him off. But because you drew close to Him and let Him work in your heart.
The Question I Want You to Sit With
Are you tithing out of guilt? Or out of gratitude?
Are you giving because you're afraid of what happens if you don't? Or because you're overwhelmed by what He's already done?
Do you see God as the IRS of heaven? Or as a loving Father who wants relationship more than revenue?
He wants YOU. Not just your wallet.
Jesus didn't die on the cross for your ties. He died for YOU. For your freedom. For your wholeness. For your relationship with Him.
The tithe was never meant to be a transaction.
It was meant to be an expression of love.
